Confrontation test of Visual Fields. The patient covers his left eye with his hand. The examiner places his right eye directly in front of the patient's open eye, at a distance of approximately 40 inches (1 meter). The patient fixes on the examiners right eye. The examiner imagines a line of sight extending between the patient's open eye and his own eye; the two can be termed the opposing eyes. A target on any point of such a radius will be equidistant between the opposing eyes at all locations. As a target he uses a flicking finger or a penlight; he moves it slowly along a radius from the periphery toward the center until the patient signifies that he can see it. Simultaneously the examiner checks his view of the target. Many different radii are tested until the entire field has been explored. This method discloses gross defects in the visual fields. |
